Why do dentists usually recommend crowns instead of replacing large fillings?

I notice the dental college will usually replace fillings but not private dentists. Is this because replacing large fillings takes too much effort and they don’t make enough money? I prefer to keep my natural tooth structure whenever possible but I don’t want to have to go to the dental college and wait seven weeks for an appointment if I am in pain.

A filling is not as strong as your normal tooth. Or even a crown. The larger the filling becomes, the weaker it also becomes. Private dentists do often replace large fillings with crowns, since the tooth can be protected in a more permanent manner. Dental Colleges don't, since the costs associated with making a crown for every patient, is too high.
