Where to go for full evaluation/ plan

Last year I had what I call “pressure pain” on left lower area of teeth - later identified as tooth 20-21. After a week or so the pain resolved. I went to my dentist - 2-3 months later where he spotted a fistula in the area. From a x-ray he believed I had a fracture in the root area of tooth - referred me to a periodontist. Based on photos (not X-rays) of teeth by assistant and X-ray that dentist took he concurred with dentist prognosis that the tooth was fractured and I needed a dental implant - I balked at the cost of 5-6K for dental implant/crown, what I felt was a lackadaisical inspection by periodontist- he didn’t even look in my mouth. I have not had pain in area since!

Well now I am experiencing similar pain in upper right area. Pain is a little more intense this time - not excruciating- but not sure I can wait it out- so I will try to see my dentist asap

My real reason for posting - I’m 74 and shocked by the cost of dental procedures now - and also cynical about the jump to removing teeth/implants - I know not all dentists are dishonest but the money nowadays is certainly motivating

Where can I go to get a honest - not self serving evaluation of the current state of my teeth with a plan for the future

Just trying a new dentist with the costs of x- rays and examination is costly and time consuming and my not yield a good result

Thank you for suggestions/comments
