Waiting months for extraction

Went to my dentist with a back tooth that has broken, am in my late sixties and so happy that I haven't needed false teeth yet, but I digress, the dentist gave me antibiotics and said she had referred me to have an extraction with sedation because is a back tooth that is broken. Rang the clinic where the extraction will take place after nearly 2 months had gone by, they said it can take up to 6 months to have an extraction on the NHS. Am now in a lot of pain, the tooth has broken even more, and am pretty sure I need antibiotics again, but is it usual to have to wait this long? And isn't it dangerous to just leave a broken tooth decayed to the root for this long without extracting it?
Asked about going privately but will be £350 just for the sedation, and between £300-£500 for the extraction itself.

Shop around! I had one molar extracted at $1000 CAD ($275 consultation, 125 panoramic X-ray, $600 extraction) by an oral surgeon

Another surgeon quoted me $1915 CAD (including full anesthesia).

In the end, my periodontist extracted for $359 CAD (all in).

Shopping around is fine, but it won't be for free, you'll still have to pay a consultation fee. If you ask for a JPG copy of the Xray and post it up here, at least we can give you an idea how difficult it really is. Maybe you don't need sedation. Repeatedly taking antibiotics is not good for you.
