The impact of a palatal expander on facial width depends on your specific anatomy, the type of expander used, and your age. Palatal Expanders widen the upper jaw (maxilla) by gently separating the midpalatal suture (the seam in the roof of your mouth). This creates space for crowded teeth and corrects a narrow "V-shaped" arch into a broader "U-shape." Lower Jaw (Mandible) Expanders are less common and work differently. They typically tip teeth outward rather than widening the skeletal jaw itself.

A palatal expander will widen the upper jaw (maxilla), which may slightly increase the width of your midface (cheekbones, nasal base). This can create a more balanced, symmetrical facial appearance. However, it does not widen the lower jaw (mandible). If your lower jaw is naturally narrow or "V-shaped," the expander won’t change that.
