Experiencing obsessive tongue rubbing against the roof of my mouth. Roof of mouth feels rough as if skin coming away. I do it morning until night. Family can hear the sucking sounds and see the weird faces I make while sucking and moving my tongue. Dentist can’t find any problem. They diagnosed me with burning mouth but might be because of an old cap that needs changing.

Obsessive tongue rubbing and the sensation of roughness on the roof of your mouth could be linked to several factors, including burning mouth syndrome (BMS), dental issues, or even habitual behaviors. BMS is sometimes linked to: Dental work (e.g., old crowns, fillings, or ill-fitting appliances). Dry mouth (xerostomia). Nutritional deficiencies (e.g., vitamin B12, iron, zinc). Hormonal changes (e.g., menopause). Stress or anxiety.

Questions to Ask Your Dentist or Doctor

Could my old crown or dental work be contributing to the roughness and discomfort?
Are there signs of oral thrush, lichen planus, or other conditions on the roof of my mouth?
Could nutritional deficiencies or hormonal changes be playing a role?
Would a referral to an oral medicine specialist or ENT be helpful?
