Toothache when eating hard food. No reaction on sweet/cold/hot food

Hello,

For months, I have a toothache when biting hard food (for example bread's crust) or chewing a gum. The tooth doesn't react to any sweet/cold/hot food.

My dentist told me that it could be caused by a hairline crack on one of the teeth on the affected side.

He recommended that we could try:

- first, fixing it with a filling but said that it may not work.

- then trying to fix it with a crown.

What is your opinion on that?

I would suggest trying to reduce the occlusion on the tooth first. Take it out of the bite and try a week course of anti-inflammatory medication. If the pain persists, you could try drilling out the crack and doing a filling first. A crown will be less conservative.

Your dentist’s recommendations are sound based on your symptoms and potential diagnosis of a hairline crack. Starting with a filling makes sense as an initial conservative approach; however, if pain persists after this treatment or if further complications arise from the crack’s severity, transitioning to a crown would likely offer better long-term relief and protection for your tooth.
