Root Canal Through Crown - Need a New Crown?

I had a Crown put on about a year and a half ago and had a Root Canal performed on the tooth one week ago. The Specialist performed the Root Canal by going through the crown and then put a temporary filling in place.

I have been hearing different things about what could be done.

My Crown is Porcelain over Precious Metal.

1. The specialist that performed the Root Canal stated that I just needed to get a permanent filing.
2. The dentist is stating that I need to get a new Crown and stated it before I even had the root canal performed. They have not seen the tooth yet.

Is the normal protocol to get a new crown?
