Root canal retreatment

I went to the endodontist the other day for a root canal retreatment, but he said he couldn't do it because he couldn't get past a ledge in the tooth or remove a post. He told me my only two options are an implant, which I really don't want, or have gum surgery.
What I want to know is if there are any other options. Should I get a second opinion because in 2020 it seems like getting past a ledge or removing a post shouldn't be impossible for an experienced endodontist with all the latest equipment.
