Pain 6 weeks after wisdom tooth removal. Normal?

6 weeks ago I had both lower wisdom teeth removed due to pericoronitis, which was causing severe pain. I did it under IV sedation and it was an easy surgery that only took 20 minutes. The pain got a lot worse on day 4 and I am still in a lot of pain.

The spaces where the teeth were burn and throb and ache and that pain radiates into my ears and temples, and side of my head. My lower jaw aches and feels like it is swollen (though it looks fine) and like it has shifted over too far. It just doesn’t feel like it’s in the right place. The bone under/behind where the teeth were hurts so much, I think that is where most, if not all, of the pain is coming from. If that makes sense. My gums and even the teeth feel swollen when the pain flares up really bad. I can also still taste blood/metal sometimes.

The pain is not 24/7, it flares up randomly. The burning pain will last a few hours and then stop. It comes in episodes at least once a day, sometimes more. I am afraid that is nerve damage, as I know that pain is described as burning.

The jaw ache will last a full day, but not everyday anymore. There is no actual swelling that I can see; but it feels swollen and inflamed.

The holes are not closed, and don’t look much smaller at all either.

At my 2 week follow up with my oral surgeon he said there was no sign of infection and that I might have dry socket based on my symptoms and to just wait it out. He said it is not normal, but not uncommon to still be in pain up to 4 weeks, especially with dry socket. He said the pain is inflammatory in nature, but should I still have inflammation now?

It has been 6 weeks and the pain is still there, and still bad enough to need Tylenol every 6 hours. It doesn’t help with the burning pain but it gives me a little relief from the aching so I take it.

I called the oral surgeon again and he said it sounds like normal, but delayed healing. Is he right, or do I need to find someone else for a second opinion? I am very worried that this pain is forever. Or that there is some serious complication, and I don’t want to wait too long if so.

I don’t want to go to another dentist if I don’t have to; I don’t want to insult mine, and I don’t want to waste my money either.

But If I do need to be seen, what type of doctor should I go to? Another oral surgeon, a general dentist, some other specialist?

Thank you in advance for any advice/opinions.
