Is this standard office practice?

Office stated they checked insurance day of. They told me over the phone they were in net work. As I get to my appointment they call my insurance then wait until I'm in the chair to tell me the doctor is out of network half way into the exam. I get a bill share of $1,200 from my insurance only covering $350 of the cost making the total exam nearly $1,500. Never heard of an exam being that high in my life.
