How can you tell if your surgical exposure chain is broken? Please help!

I can't tell whether or not my chain is broken because i see where they attached it to my wire, and I see it through the little hole in my gum, but I don't see the chain across from point A to point B. Is it possible for the gum to heal over the chain, and make it not visible in some areas? Please help!
