How bad are the receding gums in my case

I recently visited a general distist for a teeth check-up and cleaning and I also took the opportunity to ask him about my receding gums (please see the below image). I felt disturbed because the dentist was very cavalier about the whole thing, saying that "it is very common" and when I pressed him about him on what steps I should take, he brushed off my concerns and said not to worry about it.

I am pretty worried by his response and was wondering if other people here could chime in on it:
