Large back molar upper extracted due to receding gum and bone loss, had abscess Dec and 2 lots antibiotics. Extraction was difficult, lots of digging, and moving back and forward, more digging then when came out it was massive. I have not smoked since day before extraction 3 weeks ago. I had dry socket which was sheer agony for 2 weeks then now over 3 weeks by end of afternoon my jaw aches awful throbbing into jaw and surrounding teeth and jaw. is this normal?

It sounds like you need to go back. It might be that there was more than one tooth that is causing the pain. It sounds like you have periodontitis. Did the dentist refer you to a periodontist in order to evaluate the bone/gum loss?

Dentist has been keeping check on my gum disease for last 6 years and said I was doing good but it sadly the bone loss in my xrays shows it's not reversible. I have rang today and got to ring back tomorrow to see if they can see me. the pain is strange as not same as the dry socket pain was. This throws but goes into jaw. I am concerned that due to difficult extraction that a nerve is damaged as dentist kept saying after extraction that its close to the sinus? but I have no problems with sinus?
can this all just be taking time to heal? this is week 4

Difficult to say. Would need to take an x-ray to have a look at the area. Could be a range of things. Adjacent teeth with issues, nerve damage, root pieces left in situ etc.

on second week of dry socket the dentist numbed me up and cleaned socket out and removed a small piece of bone and showed me it, she said bone can come away on extraction. I don't have a copy of the xrays I only came away with my massive tooth as it had 3 big roots. Something is just not right, pain isnt normal and does not feel same as before.

Go for the follow up and let the dentist take a new x-ray.
saw dentist yesterday who brought in another dentist who is an oral surgeon but she said it isnt needing the sinus nerve doing as that is okay. She said that it is still healing which is why I have alot of pain even at 4weeks. she could still see the stuff they put In nearly 2 weeks ago in the socket. she said the pain in my jaw must be from me clenching my jaw via teeth.
I am not sure I actually believe this so far as the pain is awful and my pain killers dont seem to be helping. Has anyone else experienced this? she said another 2 weeks of this!!!

The anti-inflammatory meds should help.
If it was a difficult extraction, then healing will take longer than normal.
Difficult to say anything about the grinding issue, since I don't have a clinical picture of your teeth.
If you are not satisfied with the explanation provided by your dentist, you can seek a second opinion.

yes taking the ibrupifen and paracetamol but the throbbing and aching in jaw is not reducing yet, it was 4 weeks on friday so now into week 5. Wake up in morning and pain is 1 out 10 so fail to see how I'm clenching teeth or jaw, pain seems to rise throughout the day and worse at night even with all pain killers. Dentist said 2 more weeks which takes me to around 6 weeks, never heard of pain lasting this long in extract site and jaw ever. Have you?

It is not normal that it takes that long. That is why I would suggest going for a second opinion elsewhere. If you can, try and post the x-ray on this forum as well.

saw different dentist for emergency appointment today,he said extraction site is healing but tissue will be tender. He did tests on sinus and said all seems like healing is on it's way. he said the constant pulsating like a heart beat is the blood at the extraction site trying to repair tissue and bone loss after the difficulty of the extraction, even if it was 5 weeks ago?
he has referred me to hospital for them to also check the pain as xray shows all okay.
that referral will take 2 to 3 Months!!!! I will not cope that long so I pray the pain goes as now taking co codamel and Ibrupifen but not working yet.
