Has internal bleaching improved?

Some 35 years ago an infection in one of my front teeth resulted in a root canal treatment that subsequently killed the tooth. It stayed white for a number of years but slowly darkened from the top down at which point I had it internally bleached with a great deal of success. I'm guessing this was 15-20 years ago and now it's darker than ever before and has been for a long time and i'm looking at whether it can be done again?

My regular dentist said no but having just retired my new young, keen, and possibly more up to speed with industry developments Dentist is more re-assuring.

We've not had an in depth conversation yet but i'm wondering if the actual bleaches used have improved significantly enabling him to make such a statement?

PS: I don't want crowns or veneers;)
