Friend refuses to brush teeth. How bad is it?

Today I learned that one of my friends (24 years old) hasn't maintained his dental hygiene. When confronted about it, he ignored my advice to brush and floss regularly. He said that whenever he brushes his teeth, his gums bleed a considerable amount. I'm concerned about his health and hope that identifying the severity of the problem will motivate him to take better care of his teeth.

Could anyone help diagnose the condition of his teeth?
