Failed root canal with decay at base possible extraction

I currently have an infection in my gums due to decay at the base of tooth from a root canal previously with a crown. The Crown was not fitted correctly and the dentist said possible decay at the base and might not have enough tooth left. My dentist suggested an extraction but I will include the X-rays and a second opinion would be nice . 2 nd to the last molar. I would like to know if there is any way to fix it with out and extraction.

Based on the x-ray, it does look like the decay extends into the root as well as getting close to the furcation area. There are some specialists that can try and clean the decay and perhaps seal that area with MTA , but this is not a guarantee and does also increase the costs of the overall treatment.
An extraction, with a possible immediate implant placement, might be the better long term solution in this case, with a higher success rate.
