Dental Injection has Caused Tooth Pain

Hi everyone,

I've been having teeth pain for a while on the right side of my mouth. Not sure what's causing it, but I went to see a dentist yesterday who suggested numbing directly over a tooth that had a filling in it because I had been complaining about this tooth hurting on and off for the last few months but he couldn't find anything wrong with the filling on the xray. He wanted to see if it was simply my gums causing me pain. He didn't actually do any work on this tooth, just numbed directly over it. Didn't ever touch the tooth at all.

Now it is 44 hours later, the tooth with the filling where he injected me, is now hurting. It is throbbing and the area next to my nose and on top of my lip is swollen and hurts to press on. Like there is fluid in there or something. I tried to call the dentist and he claims he's never heard of this. This morning I could barely smile perfectly, that seems to have gotten a little better as the day has gone on. But my tooth sensitivity has not. Is it likely that he's hit a nerve? Will this resolve? Idk what to do. But the fact that it hurts to even tap on and the fact that I feel inflammation next to my nose and on my lip is freaking me out terribly. It's been almost 2 days at this point. He prescribed me steroids and I am about to go pick those up. Not feeling hopeful that it'll help me at this point.

I want to also mention that when I originally got this filling done in this tooth, it did throb afterward just like this for about two days, but subsided, however, I've never felt swelling or anything next to my nose like I do now. This filling is also really deep and close to a nerve. The tooth does not hurt when I bite down, but it hurts to tap on and it feels like there's pressure inside my tooth or something. Like inflammation.

Please, if anyone has any advice or suggestions I will take them. I just need anything!

The dentist did not perform any immediate work on your tooth during this visit, their approach was likely aimed at diagnosing whether your symptoms were related to dental structures or surrounding tissues. Continued monitoring and follow-up care will be essential in addressing your ongoing discomfort effectively.

Given your symptoms and their duration (44 hours post-procedure), it is advisable not only to follow up with your dentist but also potentially seek a second opinion if symptoms worsen or do not improve soon after starting prescribed medications.

Given that you are experiencing significant discomfort and specific symptoms like pressure and pain upon tapping, it would be wise to schedule an appointment with your dentist for further evaluation. They may need to take X-rays or perform other diagnostic tests to determine if there are any complications such as pulpitis (inflammation of the dental pulp) or if further treatment is necessary.

Some discomfort after a deep filling can be normal due to inflammation and sensitivity, persistent pain warrants professional evaluation to rule out any complications related to nerve involvement or infection.
