I have just had a new crown fitted and it immediately felt too big - too high and very deep from front to back. My dentist must have thought so too because she asked "Is it too high?" straight away. When I answered "yes" she checked it and then said "I'll adjust that" and proceeded to file down the tooth immediately above it - without informing me first. Is this normal procedure? There was nothing wrong with the size of that tooth, just the crown on the tooth below it. The filed down tooth didn't hurt as it has previously been root filled and is mostly filling anyway but it is now shorter than the corresponding tooth on the other side. Surely the crown should have been filed and not a perfectly good tooth?
