I was recommended to have a few crowns. $$$ If I opted for composite bonding is it better than nothing? Will it serve a temporary protection? Cheers, Dave

It depends on what you are starting with. Why were the crowns recommended? Was it only for aesthetic purposes? Although fillings might improve your look, they are prone to discoloration as well as fracture, since they are not as strong as normal crowns. I would suggest making a protective retainer or mouth-guard to sleep with at night.
