Chronic infection

I am 80 yrs old and have most of my own teeth but many amalgam fillings and my gums are now receding badly, I saw the dentist 3 weeks ago as I had a nasty taste in my mouth coming from a back upper molar. She took an X-ray and said there is some bone loss and a small localised infection though as it was draining would not require antibiotics. Suggested rinsing with Corsydol and maintaining good oral hygiene and keep my hygienist appointment which is now in a few days time. My question is - is it is ok to go ahead with a scale and polish whilst I have a tooth that is still slightly draining? I dont want to risk any infection spreading. Is there a likelihood that that might happen?
